It’s a horrible tragedy:
8.8 million children younger than 5 died in 2008 from mostly preventable health issues such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, malnutrition and complications at birth
Another 500,000 moms died in pregnancy, and during or after childbirth
What if they were Canadians? We would not let this happen!
The UN’s Millennium Development Goal is to reduce child deaths by two-thirds by
2015. Known, cost-effective solutions could save more than 16,000 lives every day:
Breastfeeding and
proper nutrition
Pre- and post-natal care
Immunizations and treatment for common childhood illnesses
Clean water and sanitation
This is the year to get it right. The world’s most powerful leaders are in Canada for
the G8 Summit in June and maternal and child health is on top of the agenda.
We’re asking you to act now.
Take a stand with Five for 5
Urge these leaders to put the health of children and
mothers first
Help us make them deliver
Show them you care
You really can make a difference. You can do something to urge our politicians to act. Every day, 24,000 children younger than 5 die — and 80% of the time, neglect is the main cause of death. This is not neglect by parents or family members, but rather governments’ neglect of the fundamental needs of young children and their mothers.
Do something right now to help change that.
Let your MP know that you’re pleased Canada is making child and maternal health a priority at the G8 Summit, but that concrete action must be taken if child and maternal deaths are to be prevented.
Tell the Canadian government it must put an end to so many needless deaths by taking concrete action at the 2010 G8 Summit. You’ll be redirected to
www.childhealthnow.com/act where you can speak up loud and clear.
All eyes are on Canada in 2010, especially since we started the year off with an Olympic-sized shot of goodwill. Let’s carry it through to the G8 Summit. Come onboard and stay engaged to help us prevent needless child deaths.
You’ll connect with other like-minded folks and provide the groundswell of support we need to make the G8 sit up and take notice.
Regular, informative email updates will keep you connected to Five for 5 throughout the year. You’ll also receive updates on other critical global issues affecting children and learn what you can do to ensure justice for them.
Share Five for 5 with friends, family, and colleagues, so they too can help. Together, we can make a difference. Please feel free to add your personal thoughts to the email we have created.
